I enjoyed this book and yet I didn’t. The book is set in New York City during World War I, year 1917. One thing I loved was that the words were finely crafted and descriptive but in no way hard to read. I felt like I was reading a work of art. The only thing was that this artwork was not uplifting. It was more like a painting of the darkness of the human soul. One of the main things that it made me think of was the beauty of marriage in the way that God designed it. Marriage is a covenant and commitment to one person. A decision to love that person no matter what. Whether you feel like it or not. A striving for the good of your spouse through better or worse. When that is not what a marriage is, when the covenant is disregarded that is just such a dismal and heart-retching picture. God will bless those with a true lasting love that honor their covenant before him. I liked this book because it was well written and because it made me think about God’s perfect plan for marriage. And the reason I didn’t like it is because the reason that I was thinking about God’s plan for marriage is because the completely opposite picture was painted in this book. A picture of how dark and hopeless life can be without God’s truth and love shining into the midst of a situation.
